Winter is coming and I don’t have to extend how hard it is to work in winter. Working outside during the winter can leave workers susceptible to illness such as Hypothermia and frostbites. Hypothermia is a condition of a body when its core temperature drops below what is required for normal metabolism and bodily functions. If exposed for a longer period in cold, the condition can turn into fatal.
Therefore, few ounces of prevention are worth more than a pound of cure. Keeping that in mind, it very important to wear the right safety workwear while working in the cold season. Below are few tips on how to choose the right safety workwear for the winter.

Avoid Cotton

One of the single most thing to avoid wearing while working outdoors during the winter season is cotton. Cotton is probably the worst fabric to wear during winter. Once cotton gets wet from rain, snow or sweat, it starts to take heat away from your body. Especially wears like cotton socks, inner wears or a cotton t-shirt are more prompted to extract heat from your body.

Use Layering Systems

The layering system is one of the best ideas that can be applied if you want to work outside comfortably. Layering systems include wicking layer, a light insulating layer, a heavy insulating layer, windproof-waterproof layer, Winter Toque, Gloves or Mitts and Socks and Gaiters.

• The wicking layer is layer next to your skin. This layer helps you to avoid your body cooling down due to sweat. This layer removes moisture from your body and transfers it to the next layer. Recommended fabrics for this layer include synthetic or polypropylene, tops, and socks-avoid cotton at any cost.

• The light insulating layer is the second layer and sits on top of the wicking layer. Thin wool or light fleece sweater is an excellent light insulating layer.

• The heavy insulating layer includes heavier wool or fleece sweater as it traps heat in the body in the process keeping you warm.

• The windproof-waterproof layer protects the body from outer weather conditions. A 15⁰c temperature with 15 mph wind can feel like 0⁰c. Therefore, it is very important to wear a proper wind-water proof dress.

• Winter Toque or a winter hat is a very important part of winter workwear set up. As most of the heat flow out of the head, winter hats protect as much warmth as all those layers. Balaclava should be worn if hard hats are compulsory in extremely cold conditions.

• Mitts are particularly warmer than gloves but it is not practical to work wearing gloves, especially if you are working in details. Wear thin gloves and wear mitten over that. If you are working in details, you can remove the glove and put it on immediately after finishing the work.

• A two-layered sock system is recommended when working outside in cold weather conditions. A thin sock with a wool sock is a proper standard as it allows moisture to be wicked from the feet and wool will stay warm even when soaked. Shoe size is also important as a tight fit will restrict circulation.

• Gaiter is also highly recommended if your work involves working in snowy conditions. Gaiters prevent snow sliding down in the boots and ass warmth by trapping air.

Apart from clothing, you need to fuel up your body. Intake calories steadily over the day. A timely snack is far better than two heavy meals. Carbohydrate is a very important part of nutritional diet and cheese, butter and meats help to keep your body warm. If you are going to work in cold conditions avoid caffeine and alcohol intake as it restricts blood vessels, impeding the body’s ability to heal itself.

7 Tips For Choosing The Best Winter Work Gloves

After all, no one wants to go through the winter shivering and come back from work with frostbites. Who wants to work on a winter day wearing half sleeves t-shirts? Nobody! 1. Think carefully about the glove material
